What is CCPA? The California Consumer Privacy Act is a section of consumer privacy law passed into California law on June 28th of 2018. The act, also known as “AB 375,” has been called by some as “almost GDPR in the U.S.” This act is, by far, the most robust privacy law passed in any U.S. state at the moment. It gives more control to customers in regards to their private data. The CCPA is poised to have far-reaching consequences on data privacy. Students will learn the fundamental concepts and provisions of the regulation.

CCPA And Consumers

According to this act, customers may ask companies to reveal what personal information they have about their clients and what they do with that data. Customers also have the right to be notified before or at the point when companies gather their personal information. Generally, companies cannot discriminate against customers for using their rights under the CCPA. Companies cannot make customers ignore these rights, and any liability provision that tells customers to waive these rights is unenforceable. Users who take this course will learn the practical steps to reach compliance with the CCPA. There are 10 Modules in this course that explore the privacy commitments instituted by the CCPA. In the first module, students will learn about privacy and the legislative history of the CCPA. Next, they will learn how the CCPA act signifies a withdrawal from the decades-old USA privacy management. After this, students will learn about the particular privacy components such as HIPAA, GLBA, and COPPA that make up the law. They will also learn about the new consumer rights, new protections for minors, and its implementation mechanisms.

After finishing the first three modules, all the next “privacy in action” modules teach the students how to implement a CCPA compliance program at their place of work. Students will learn how this law gives customers more authority over what personal information companies gather and how they use it.

Next, they will learn how to take the data back to their companies and implement it with a CCPA compliance program. They will also learn to design a CCPA compliance policy and create consumer request procedures. Modules 4 to 6 cover how to achieve consumer opt-out requests, implementing online marketing (cookies, etc.) that comply with CCPA requirements.

Modules 7 and 8 are all about CCPA enforcement. First, students will learn about data protection authorities and review CCPA in action. Next, they will take everything that they have learned up until this point and apply it, practically, to places of work.

Once these details are covered, in modules 9 and 10, the course will address the crucial differences between the CCPA and E.U. privacy law GDPR. The course will then conclude by exploring the future of the CCPA. Here, students will also evaluate the major upcoming CCPA amendments in the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). This course is aimed at a general audience. People who currently work as a CISO or other such I.T. departments where they share accountability for assuring that data is kept safe and secure at their company will benefit from this course.

Once all the modules are covered, students will explore how to use all the knowledge obtained from the modules with a CCPA compliance program. Students will be able to:

  • Design a CCPA compliance policy.
  • Create consumer request procedures
  • Meet customer opt-out demands
  • Execute online marketing (cookies, etc.) that follow the CCPA provisions.

In other words, by the end of this course, students will learn what exactly made the CCPA a reality. They will be proficient in giving solid advice at their workplace on how to execute effective solutions to secure CCPA compliance. Students will also distinguish the privacy responsibilities placed by the CCPA from its foreign peers and how the existing variant of the CCPA applies to the rapidly growing privacy aspect.
