The Understand Utility Software - Anti-Malware, Software Firewalls, Maintenance and Compression Tools module provides you with the instruction and devices to develop your hands on skills in the defined topics. This module includes the following exercises:

  • Using Anti-Malware
  • Software-Based Firewalls
  • Diagnostics and Maintenance Software
  • Compression Software

Exam Objectives

The following exam objectives are covered in this lab:

  • FC0-U51: 1.2 Identify common programs, applications and their purpose (Types).
  • FC0-U51: 3.1 Define basic security threats (Malware).
  • FC0-U51: 3.2 Given a scenario, use security best practices (Device hardening).
  • FC0-U51: 5.1 Perform appropriate steps to set up a basic workstation (Install security software).

Exercise 1 - Using Anti-Malware

In this exercise, you will install anti-malware (malicious ware) to combat malicious code like viruses, worms, spyware, adware and others that can cause system damage to your computer or seriously affect its performance.

These tools can be downloaded from major anti-malware vendors online and may differ in features and capabilities. For home users, you can use the free version which have limited functionality or opt for a full featured product which is subject to a subscription fee for its license and end-user support.

Exercise 2 - Software-Based Firewalls

A firewall protects your computer from unauthorized access from users or applications outside of your network. There are many variants of firewalls available today, in this exercise you will use a host-based software firewall which intended to protect just one computer.

Exercise 3 - Diagnostics and Maintenance Software

In this exercise, you will use the event viewer as a diagnostic tool to find out common errors that you may encounter with your computer. Events recorded in the event log provide additional information about the cause of the error. This event log can be used by technical support personnel in tracing the root cause of the system problem and be able to devise ways to resolve the issue.

Exercise 4 - Compression Software

Windows has a built-in compression that you can use called NTFS compression. This only works if the files reside in a volume using Windows’ native file system called New Technology File System.

You may also use third party compression software available from other software vendors which contain features like password protection for your compressed folders/files.
