An Application Security Vulnerability Analyst is responsible for analyzing and reducing cyber threats and vulnerabilities, disseminating cyber threat warning information, and coordinating incident response activities within an organization’s IT structure. The Analyst must possess expertise in vulnerability management processes and network vulnerability scanning and must have an understanding of common code review methods and standards. It is important that the Analyst have experience working in software development, working with vulnerability scanning tools (including Web application vulnerability scanning tools), and have experience with static analysis tools.

These abilities and experience will prepare the Application Security Vulnerability Analyst to take on the responsibilities of:

  • configuring network scans
  • scheduling network scans
  • performing application vulnerability assessments and ensuring that accurate vulnerability assessment results are generated
  • collecting, analyzing, interpreting, evaluating, and integrating complex data from multiple sources to update existing intelligence products and create new ones
  • determining which application security requirements to add, delete, and change
  • determining the processes to allow user access to various applications
  • maintaining application security documentation procedures
  • maintaining documentation needed for security audits
  • troubleshooting issues that arise from vulnerability scanning
  • serving as the technical expert for the applications’ vulnerability assessment tools


General Educational Requirements

Most employers of Application Security Vulnerability Analysts generally require a Bachelors Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems Management, Information Technology, Business, Engineering, or any other tech-related field. The minimum requirement for some employers, however, is an Associates Degree in Information Technology, Business, Engineering, or a related field. A candidate for this position must possess security-related industry certifications, and some employers may require a background check or a government clearance. 


Additional Qualifications

An Application Security Vulnerability Analyst must have strong business and information security ethics and strong written and verbal communications skills. The Analyst must be able to present findings to technical and non-technical staff and must be able to develop comprehensive and professionally written reports.
