This is less than 11.1 printer technology's part one, an overview installation and maintenance of printing technologies. Let's go and get started,
00:09
OK, in today's lesson, What we're gonna do is talk about two different printers within our printer technology. Siri's. We're gonna talk about impact printers or dot matrix printers, and we're gonna talk about thermal printers. We're gonna go over the details. They ended outs about those printers and give you a lot of information about those
00:25
again. A longer Siri's of printer technologies for your company. A plus.
00:29
So let's go and get started.
00:32
Impact printers are dot matrix printers on it, and Cracked printer is a type of printer that makes an impact on the page to create a print out. Put a dot Matrix printer is one of the most common force of impact printers. Now, the dot matrix printer has a series of peons of the print hand that are pushing through a ribbon impacting the page to make characters and letters.
00:52
So how this works is there's a ribbon that's inside of dot matrix printer,
00:56
and there's pin hands will seal the next slide, and printers have different numbers of pins depending on the type of printer. But those pins correlate punched in through to the ribbon to the paper rather different characters that it's praying, printed out. So as you can see the image here, in the center of the screen of the bottom
01:15
is a series of letters, and this is how the dot matrix printer
01:19
prints letters and numbers and characters in the forms of little dots. Again, these dots are impacts. Little pin impacts are crossed, the ribbon striking the paper, leaving the mark on the paper
01:34
and, of course, on the bottom right hand side. That's a picture of a dot matrix printer. These printers are still quite popular. They were very, very popular in the early eighties. In the nineties, it's still quite proper. Now they print on a series of papers, perforated papers like one continuous long form, which will see in a moment
01:53
these were used for pronounced for receipts of the type of paper work in offices at one time. So this at one time was the primarily most common type of printer found.
02:07
Now the printer head has a matrix of peons, and hence the name dot matrix of that are being used to form these letters and characters on the page. The print had moves back and forth across the page, and while it's moving, the peons will push into the paper to create a character. A letter on the page and again, depending on the type of printer head on the type of printer
02:25
you may have a type of predator has nine pins,
02:29
18 piss or 24 peons and as your typing characters. It could be, um, Jane. Walk the dog and each character will be coming. Cross that printer to these print hands, and it'll be printing out in a series of letters across that ribbon, punching through the ribbon onto the paper.
02:46
And then you can see the picture of the pans and how they will look on the on the printer and as well as the printer itself.
02:58
Now the ribbon cartridge defended to these printers, the ribbon for the dot matrix printer is a case that contains one long ribbon, and that ribbon is sent through multiple Thailand times until it's difficult to read or the output of page or your characters are starting to get faded.
03:15
But because of this is a single unit. It's very easy to remove out of the printer inside a new one
03:20
on you could have a fresh ribbon that's ready to go, so that entire cartridge comes out of the printer and is being replaced in that printer. Very easy maintenance there as far as slums sliding in and out. So again, the concept here is you have the printer hand with the pins.
03:38
This ribbon fits in between the pinheads and the paper,
03:42
and as the
03:43
characters come through, the printer is it prints your print job, the print heads punched through or punch the ribbon onto the paper, and characters are left on the paper.
03:57
Now, speaking of paper for the dot matrix I mentioned earlier that. And if you remember, if you're familiar with these printers, the DOT matrix printer has a long, continuous feed paper shown on the right. This came in normally boxes or cartons, and the paper has a Siri's of periphery. It'd sections and edges,
04:16
and those edges are used in the printer and being fit by something called a tractor feet.
04:23
So paper food dot matrix printer is that like a set of continuous sheets of paper that are on one very long piece of paper paper for the dot matrix printer is on a continuous long sheet of paper with perforations in the middle so you could separate them.
04:36
You feed this paper for the printer, and there are also small holes on the side, which is called tractor feeds. The tractor faint uses these holes. To be able to pull the paper through The tractor feed was a series of wheels with spikes on them, and the spikes or these knobs would line up in the paper,
04:57
and it would advance the paper as its printing or keep the paper being fed through the machine.
05:01
And again, this was one long, continuous sheet of paper, and generally the paper would be set up under the printer. It would be fed into the printer and you're ready to print. And as it continues, Apprentice continued to pull paper out of that box.
05:17
Thermal printers, another printer In our print technology, Siri's, the thermal printer is a printed. It does not use ink or toner. The printer uses a special type of paper that sensitive to heat when sent through the thermal printer. Portions of the page are heated and every place that it he that's heated, turns black.
05:38
This is Julie used for receipts. Andi. It's very quiet operation.
05:42
You're pricing this and allowing the retail shops and stores receipt printers again. When you send a print job to this, parts of the heating element are heated, and those characters, or whatever is being printed, is what's coming out on that thermal paper, and you could see the image of the right. There is a type of receipt. There are shipping label,
06:01
and again that's for heat being generated across the
06:04
heat element in the in the that transfers right to the paper.
06:12
Now the thermal printer is known for its quiet operation duty. It's it's very few moving parts, really. The only part that's moving in the thermal printer is the fee that pulls the paper through. Other than that, they have the heating element that the paper rose across. But that's not moving. It's fixed
06:31
now. The heating element on the heating element inside of a thermal printer heat. Certain parts of the paper passing through the entire lift of the lay of the paper is covered by that heating element. Now, as the paper is going by the heating element is only heating parts of the element at a particular time. So again as your typing in characters and you what
06:50
tools characters to be printed.
06:53
That print job is on Lee heating certain parts of the heating element to four of those characters on the thermal paper.
07:00
The heating element will get dirty over time. It will need cleaning different type of ways that manufacturers recommend cleaning the Hilary King element using a liquid cleaner i p. A. Isopropyl alcohol are cleaning pin, and also there's something called a cleaning cart. It's a car that you run through the thermal printer,
07:20
and it cleans the element as well as the paper pathways.
07:26
Now the paper that goes into a thermal paper printer is a special type of paper. It's a paper that's very sensitive to heat it, specializing chemically treated, and various size papers match machine to machine. So you need to check with your machines vendor to make sure you have a proper paper.
07:46
If you don't use the proper paper in the proper machine, it will calls jams and will not go through.
07:50
And Agassi from the image of the right is very easy to low the paper in a thermal printer, and you've probably seen this at a checkout in a grocery store, some type of retail market where you're maybe the at the register and they're out of printer paper and it's easily you just open it up and they just pull the old arm
08:11
spool out,
08:11
put the new role in feed it through, close it, and there's normally like a feet or advancement to advance the paper through. And once it's advanced through its ready to print again, it's that easy, simple operation to maintain this as faras we feeling paper.
08:28
Okay, so that was just two of our printers in our printer technology. Siri's the Impact Printers or Dr Matrix printers. We talked about the print head, the ribbon, the tractor feed impact paper maintenance. We talked about the thermal paint printer, the feet assembly, the heating element and improper maintenance on that one. So
08:48
that's it for this lesson, and we will
08:50
see you in the next lesson.
