this is less than 11 doc to printer maintenance. We're gonna talk about maintenance on the printers that we covered earlier in the series, so let's go and get started. So in this lesson, what we're gonna do is go verse of maintenance tips and suggestions and steps that you need to do in order to maintain the three common printers in our printer
00:19
technology. Siri's
00:21
the impact printer, the ink jet printer and the laser printer. If you encounter any of these printers while you're on the field as a technician, you'll know what steps to need to take in order to maintain in order and provide maintenance in any of these devices. So let's go ahead and get started.
00:39
So first we're gonna start with the impact printer and one of the common things that you're going to do. Our need to do with the impact printer is replaced the ribbon. Now the ribbon is a self contained cartridge. It's an all in one cartridge with the ribbon that's inside this spool.
00:56
The ribbon is it spooled up into the cartridge area,
01:00
and there's an exposed area that goes right by where the printer head goes. So what you would find is as the ribbon is worn and its printing more more copies, the text will get lighter and lighter and lighter. So at that point you'll know that you need to replace the ribbon.
01:15
So again it's a module unit. It's easy to replace. Shouldn't take you no more than a minute to replace this.
01:22
Ribbons are very specific to the model of the dot matrix printer, so you have to make sure that you get the correct ribbon for that printer, which you would do to replace. The ribbon is there will be a lever or guard that you need to undo
01:36
and pick up the entire unit. Just pop it out and get the new unit and pop it right back in. It's that easy,
01:42
replacing the printer hand from time to time because that is a moving park. The printer had will get worn, and it will be needing to be replaced and order to replace the printer. Hand on a dot matrix printer, which would have to do is look for a release lever or bar. Some models may vary
02:00
released that lever or they remove that bar,
02:02
and you could pull the print head right out and replace it with the new print. And now be careful because this is a moving part and they tend to bid up heat, so you want to unplug the unit beforehand. Moving the replacing the unit
02:17
paper of all the steps of a impact printer or dot matrix printer paper may be the most challenging. To be honest with you. Now, remember, the paper is a continuous feed paper, so it's one long sheet of paper and the paper is fed by those tractor wheels on this on the side of the printer.
02:36
Some of the papers perforated, so you have to make sure that lines up a cz well,
02:39
which would have to do is Lina's paper up and feed it in with the tractor tractor wheels to pull it through your printer. And again, you'll see here on the image that sometimes the prom paper here will have a form that needs to be a lined up correctly with the printers he'd have. The lineup is, well,
03:00
make sure the paper is lined up correctly because that will cause problems. In the end,
03:05
forms must be position in the right place, so text can fill out in the spaces on those pretty foreign papers. Also, text may have predefined feels so again you want to line it up to the printer head, and each section will be perforated, so you have the line those up to make sure it catches correctly.
03:23
Also, what you want to do on the paper is because it's a continuous roll.
03:27
You want to make sure that it's flowing easily because you don't want having any binds or anywhere where it can grab because it will rip because it's a continuous flow. Paper is just going to continue, say, flow as this printer prints
03:43
inkjet printer on one of the common things that you're doing. An ink jet printer is the print heads claiming the print hits. Some machines have a daily print head cleaning schedule, and it will automatically clean. Now if your printer does not have a daily schedule like that. Routinely checked the print hands to see if they're dirty. Have filed
04:00
and you'll know that because if you look at the inn cartridge in, you pull it out.
04:03
You see they're filed upon the heads below while you'll see ink build up. Those would need to be cleaned. Look for streaks on the paper as well, or sections missing and color prosecutes me. Process could be started manually, meaning the process to clean the kids. The calibration process on that printer.
04:20
Some print heads are get our separate from the EQ.
04:25
Jet cartridges on day can be clean separately, so the print hands themselves can be removed.
04:31
Replacing the cartridges in the inkjet printer is fairly easy. A lot of times in the models many models when you open the door to get to the thing, the inject Carter's themselves, the carriage will move it to the whole position so you can replace those cartridges
04:47
when the cover is opened. Most common colors that you're gonna have to replace
04:51
is the Scion magenta, the yellow and the key, which stands for black. Some of these units will be combined. Someone will be separated, and a lot of times these cartridges are recyclable, so you want to check with your local office supply stores. See if they offer a recycling plant.
05:08
But again, replacing inject printer cartridges is fairly, fairly easy.
05:13
Calibration. After you finished your ink jet maintenance as faras replacing the Toner Cup cartridges. You want to provide a calibration on again that calibration will sometimes be automatic after you replaced the ancient cartridges, or you may have to start it from the menu.
05:30
I may have to make some adjustments as well as with the calibration
05:33
it aligns the nozzle to the papers line should be clear and sharp when it does the calibration test, and the color should be even. They should not be blotchy or faded
05:46
on. Another common thing that you will take have to do with each printer is clear paper jams. Before attempting to clear any jams, remove any loose paper from the unit. Remove the paper tray. That's Ah, good tip right there. Move the paper tray so you can get access to the paper.
06:03
Remove any paper that's in the paper path. Sometimes you may see papers hanging out or partial page
06:09
that did not feed all the way into the printer. You wanna grab that using firm pressure, but avoid ripping it because if you rip, it may cause even more problems. Once is clear, tried Thio Print the print job again,
06:24
moving on to the laser printer now one of the most common maintenance functions dear to perform on a laser printer is replacing the toner cartridge. Now the toner will be low before empty, and many models will have a low tone, a warning on the screen and tell you, and someone will tell you how low it's
06:43
The toner is getting,
06:45
Ah, particular model that I've just recently worked on had a 5% 10% lifestyle in the on the screen. It shows you as far as the different levels that the toner is getting, too.
06:58
So be an error message or warning message on the screen. Now, some toner cartridges contain the drum. They're all in one unit. Some drums are separate, but some toner cartridges contain the drum that has caught an organic photo conductor drum you want. What you want to do is because this drum is photosensitive. You want to keep it in the bag until you're ready to
07:17
replace that
07:18
once you're ready to replace it, you wanna power down a unit before you replace that toner cartridge. Remove all the packaging from that toner. A lot of times there are ribbons or extra are strips of paper or plastic in there, preventing it from the toner leaking while it's in travel,
07:36
so you want to pull those free and go ahead and insert that toner cartridge into your printer
07:42
and the toner cartridge replacement will vary. Depending on the printer that you're changing, you'll see that it may be a tube that you insert color. Laser printers will be individual toner cartridge that you'll remove one by one, and some will be an all unit were all in one unit, rather where you just
08:00
pool or replace or place it into, like on the picture on the far right.
08:05
I made this kid for your laser printers chili, the most common used parts they were out of before any other parts. These are them parts that's moving their heated continually. These are the parts that's always in use, and they tend to wear all quicker, so the vendors and manufactures have put these parts together. Any kit
08:24
they may contain feed rollers, a fuser unit and other items.
08:28
You want to check the time for maintenance where your printer, by using the printout from the printers, page counter or other documentation, they may have a routine schedule for you to check these. These are items on these devices. So again, you if you notice that the rollers are worn, your printing is a little bit lighter. It may be time to replace
08:48
some of these parts with his maintenance kid.
08:50
Power down the unit before performing any maintenance and reset the camp age counter when you're done,
08:58
and afterwards you want to do a laser printer. Calibration processing process may be prompted by the printer or after maybe manual. And a lot of times when you replace the maintenance kit and you put everything back together, it may prompt you to do this calibration.
09:13
Our check the manufacturer's documentation as faras the schedule or how your laser printer would perform. Those,
09:18
UM, will consist of a series of prints with dissidents set density settings for the printer. There's a printout right there was one particular one that shows you colors and make sure the colors are not faded or splotchy. Sometimes they will even have live. They will print out to make sure your lines are sharpened. Crisp
09:39
Cleaning your laser printer. Um, laser printers tend to get a lot of dust inside of checked your manufacturer's recommendation on cleaning the internal areas of your particular laser Brenner or the laser printer picture dealing with I P. A. Isopropyl. Alcohol and water are common chemicals that you can use.
09:56
Use recommended Kimmel's chemicals by that manufacturer.
10:00
Clean rollers with I p A. Inside of the printer. Don't use compressed air or vacuum. Wipe the dust away. That way, you're not causing more just to settle in other areas of machine and called further problems down the road. On the outside, you want to clean it with a damp cloth,
10:16
and there may be other instructions again per that Laser printers, mate, this document tastes so check with your manufacturer.
10:22
Okay, so what we've done is went through maintenance steps for the three printers that we cover in our printing technology areas. That would be the impact printer, ink jet printer and a laser printer. So we've talked about common things that she would need to do to maintain the good working condition of those machines.
10:41
And also, if you're out in the field as a technician
10:43
and you're called to troubleshoot one of those devices, you'll know what to do. So that is it for this lesson, and we will see you in the next lesson.
