Video Description

Installing and Configuring DFS This lesson focuses on installing and configuring DFS. The Distributed File System (DFS) is actually an optional role that can be implemented in an environment. The Distributed File System is helpful if a server goes down because the files can be accessed in another environment. In this lab-based lesson, participants learn step by step instructions in how to install and configure DFS.

00:04
GFS or distributed file system is actually a
00:08
optional role that we often implement in our environment. Basically,
00:13
call it
00:15
riel time or near real time. Or as we could do with custom, even off hours,
00:21
automatic replication of files from one environment to nose. Basically making sure we have the same files are two different servers.
00:27
It's really good if we're working across the way and so that you don't always have the same father going back up for its across the way. We could use a branch cash to do some of it also. But GFS actually allows
00:36
to some degree think about a fault tolerant environment where just cause a server goes down there was hosting follows doesn't mean that you're out of business because another server has the same files on it and will automatically be accessed by the actual end users. Because the name space is what's access is not being map directly to a share
00:56
on a server,
00:57
you're mapping a drive on the end users environment to a specific name space, so it's got to get the D. F s server installed on our environment. So on our manage
01:07
under server manager, we're gonna add rolls and features
01:11
and bring up our splash screen. We could skip that
01:14
role based yes,
01:15
and we're going to choose our local server. Yes, next.
01:19
And now we're going to expand out that file of storage service is option.
01:25
Once again,
01:26
we've done that before. It added. Additional days were really two in now, actually go to added
01:32
GFS names basis. So go ahead and click on D EFS. Nay spaces there.
01:34
When I make that capability available,
01:38
click on add features
01:38
and while we're at it, go ahead. Put a defense replication
01:42
because it would have wanted replicate also across our environment.
01:45
We choose those two options it click up next,
01:49
and we're on a features page. Do we actually have any features that we need to include with this
01:55
notice? We don't have any that we
01:57
need to future with this, so
02:00
include that
02:01
it were.
02:02
Have the restart automatically if necessary, but check box if you want to, Or we could describe click on install
02:08
and wait for it to process the installation as well.
02:13
Install the source files that we need for a. D. F s environment. Vega's our basic configuration, including the Council manages. This is all part of our pilot story service's, which includes several items. Obviously we know filing Nice Cousy Service's We include file management screens. F s R m
02:30
throughout Professor Im. We actually about to do a d f s for replication of files across our environment. Once we actually have the d. F s role installed, we'll take a look at how we can actually work with it in our environment. It first be thing being. Obviously,
02:46
if it's a d f s name space operation, we're going to need to create a defense needs space.
02:51
Go ahead that closely.
02:53
No, we're done.
02:53
And
02:54
if you look up, your little flag here tells you that there's
02:59
a future. Slash was completed, We could close out of that. Don't need to be told that in
03:02
quick on our tools.
03:04
Hey, we have other cools GFs management.
03:07
So let's go ahead and open up our Defense Management Council there.
03:10
Get that in our screen the way we want it.
03:15
You know,
03:15
now we have the f s management. We have the basic one which is over here, it says used to snap in the
03:23
create managed GFs Nay spaces in replication groups.
03:25
Bugs JANA to multiple servers. Collect data for back up purposes. Made his maid spaces replication.
03:30
Careful about the SEC would describe data for back up purposes.
03:35
Remember,
03:36
if it's modified, a one d F s needs basic. It's modified of the next. It was truly a backup. Not really. It's a fail over option more than a back.
03:45
This is not a replacement for doing your backups on a regular basis, because backups allow you to recover from a disaster, whereas the fail over
03:54
if the fire's gone defies God or the file's corrupted files corrupted on both our multiple locations. So
04:01
bear mind,
04:02
it's not a true backup of the sets, although it says
04:06
collect data for back up purposes.
04:08
Anyway,
04:09
we're going to go through the process of working with this, and we're going to want to create a new name space. So it's first of all. What to do is create a new day of space.
04:18
It says, Give us a name space server. So I have to choose a name space. Ever in this particular case, we're gonna actually choose the server that were on, and we just type in
04:29
the lead.
04:30
Quick check names of give us a Lester would choose S v R one. That's a server were on. I'm gonna just type that in.
04:35
We got okay.
04:38
A quick god. Next. So there's our
04:40
served. We choose,
04:42
and it says, Enter a name for the day's space.
04:45
Remember, we're talking about mapping for the clients. The name becomes a U N C path
04:49
or either by slash, slash 78 or slash slash domains. And then they
04:55
This is what we want. A figure properly for our viral, but we're going to
05:00
under the name space. Name is setting stab. We're going to give it a name. Very simplistic. The names just go to be research. So Ari has the r c h.
05:10
Well, today we're gonna put in it
05:12
and notice we actually have the bottom of that at its settings there. If we needed to, we could quick on at the settings here, it would give us an option
05:20
of where is gonna put it. Says the local path of shared folder
05:25
would remember where we're gonna put in matters. You obviously don't want to put things in your C drive, so that would be important but we're not gonna worry about that. We're gonna cancel on that for right now.
05:35
Quick. Next
05:38
it says, Is it a domain based name space or stand alone day space? Notice? The main base is going to be using your a date of dot com or whatever your domain, his environment and enable one to server 2008 mode is checked by default. Stand alone would be the server name itself. The domain name space is always preferable. We want to use a domain name space and check
05:58
the enable 70 that was on a boat
06:00
because we went backwards Cap
06:01
backwards.
06:02
Compatibility.
06:03
It's not a good idea to use a stand alone a space, because then you get into issues of the name of the server. So we're going to debate it based and click on next.
06:14
This is you selected the following sentence the day space. Here it is. The information it says local path and a space shared folders defense roots research
06:23
bear in mind that is the real production of armor. When I got actually do this on a C driver who put this on the sand location for the actual
06:30
in terms of the fault folders that are being stored.
06:33
But we're gonna cook out and create here
06:36
that would go through the process and tell us if there's any years created a space success.
06:42
There's our Knud secret close.
06:45
We expect there to be any errors. We've actually now created a nave space
06:49
within that we now have nay spaces, those we have a day's space here.
06:54
We now want to
06:56
folks you within our environment to do the next piece of the puzzle. So you know mine is Rick Castle. We're going to come into our days space here,
07:03
quarter in these spaces
07:05
in our one day's face.
07:06
We're gonna watch you
07:09
under that one right click and do a new folder.
07:12
So we actually want to tell it what type of Fuller We're working with a quick new folder.
07:16
And in this particular case, given Fuller called
07:18
proposals
07:21
and
07:23
we're going to
07:24
choose
07:26
to click add for the full two targets because where our proposals going? Well, we need to tell it to add a full to target here,
07:32
and we're gonna need to tell it to path to that fool to target.
07:34
So the folder target is going to be
07:39
a
07:42
location so we could quit. God, where is going to be?
07:45
And so those years
07:46
Hello and s s V R won by default
07:48
it We could show shared folders here,
07:51
so we should share folders. We got the research so we could drill down here That says
07:58
if we want to, we can actually put in anything. So the dialogue box Wicked.
08:03
For example, if we hit cancel here, we can actually typing path to this. We could type in
08:09
for the folder. We could quick before the target's a slash slash
08:13
Hello, Ed Dash s v r would slash. And then, for example,
08:20
pose a ll underscore docks. So here we go.
08:22
Proposal?
08:24
Underscore
08:26
docks.
08:28
No, this is not a dot There. It's an underscore. So we could just type that in there. Quick out. Okay, so it could be No, this is the shared folder does not exist.
08:35
Well, that's exactly as you would expect it.
08:37
And you cook out? Yes, to create it.
08:39
So
08:41
now we've created a
08:43
folders that we've worked with Its proposal underscore, Doc. So we could guess it on the next screen is goingto ask us for the local path
08:52
of the shared folder.
08:54
Very mind that the F s day space is one piece of the puzzle downwards and local path of the shared folder
08:58
Well
08:58
is good and quick on the local past year would be
09:03
see
09:03
colon bear mind I was So we know in a production environment we don't put things on the C drive, So C colon
09:09
backslash of the proposal docks.
09:16
It's about that wrong.
09:18
Rosell underscore docks
09:20
it
09:22
terms of our users.
09:22
We need to choose how we're gonna figure this.
09:26
All users have read only all users have read, right administers have full access. Others are read only administers full access. Others have read rite permission.
09:33
Now you would decide what you're gonna do with this. And it's proposals you probably need rewrite for the user's, and admissions obviously will have full permission.
09:41
Did you click on okay
09:43
and says yes to create the folder because it doesn't exist quick? Yes.
09:48
And there's our environment Set up it. We quit. God.
09:52
Yes, her. Okay. I should say to close the d folder. You know, we've had a d folder. If you have a folder in r D F s day space,
10:00
we actually want you, then
10:01
look at our environment is a little bit further detail, so we want to actually get down to that
10:07
proposals. So
10:09
here's our proposals
10:11
we went to. Currently there's only one folder target to provide, So there are proposals.
10:16
We have
10:18
only
10:18
one full there. It's enabled.
10:20
Ed Replication is not yet
10:24
enabled, so we have a full the target and the other one we have is fall first name. It tells you
10:30
the location, the path of what we're working with
10:33
such provide redundancy. A second folder target may be added with the F S replication configured,
10:37
which is correct. That's the best approach is to make sure you have defensor application and have a second folder. So to test in a space were guys to open, follow, explore and type in
10:48
the name space to see how it's going to work.
10:50
That's fairly simple. Let's go ahead. Open a file Explorer.
10:54
It put in our days later
10:56
stash lash, and it's a date, oh
11:00
dot com
11:01
slash
11:03
research.
11:05
And there it is. There's our proposals, so that gives us a
11:09
resource that's available through a U. N C path rather than being hard coded to the server is important was about hard coded to a server that service off line, that I still have the same failure problem Where is about Hard Quarter to a name space and that multiple servers that are functioning that day space that I end up with a
11:26
fault tolerant feel over does it environment.
11:28
So
11:30
that gives us a piece of the puzzle that we want to work with.
11:33
So the last piece of the puzzle, obviously, is to add another D. F s server and actually have the replication between the day spaces so that actually I have that fall Thomas built it.
11:43
That gets us our rest of our environment. Basic setup.
