Network Topologies: Network Categories This lesson covers different network topologies and network categories. A topology is a layout of a network both physically and logically. The different network categories include:

  • Local Area Network (LAN): these tend to be inside offices and schools
  • Wide Area Network (WAN): multiple local area networks
  • Personal Area Network (PAN): Bluetooth and Infared
  • Metro Area Network (MAN): located in a college or city

Hi and welcome to Cyber Eri. My name's Anthony and I'm your local subject matter expert for Network Plus And today we're going to be covering different networked apologies.
So when we're talking about are different networked apologies. What do we mean by a topology? Well, just like when we're talking about maps or geography are networked. Apology is sort of the lay of the land. It's our overview of how everything looks not only physically, but also logically.
We may have a logical
network topology map, which shows how everything is interconnected Logically, if it's a a ring or a star or token, are a token or a star or a mesh or bust apology. Or we may have a top topology map that actually shows us how our network it looks physically.
So we need to understand the difference between are different types of apologies
as well as the difference between are different types of networks. But before we get into our individual different apologies, we need to take a look at some of our major categories. Now are major categories of networked. Apologies are going to be our land whan pan and man networks.
This stands for our local area network are wide area networks are personal area network in our metropolitan area network.
Now our local area network is going to be our inside our home office or school network is gonna be our small local network,
consisting of typically the devices inside of our building that are under our control.
So our first stop is our first stop is our office building.
And we have a couple of different computers,
as well as some switches and a router
and maybe a couple bridge and then maybe a bridge over into another floor with
their own computers.
This whole inter office connective itty would be our land,
our local area network.
Now our next step out would be our next network topology. Well, actually, jump over into is going to be our pan, our personal area network. So inside of this land, we have a user who's who has their phone hooked up to their headset with Bluetooth,
and they also have their phone communicating with their laptop through Bluetooth
and this little personal area of theirs. Either communicating through Bluetooth or maybe a small wireless connectivity or there are infrared connectivity is going to be called their personal area network there pan. Typically, we're gonna be connecting through Bluetooth or infrared technologies,
but it's going to be our small network, usually about 10 no more than like 10 meters in diameter.
That includes things such as our Bluetooth headset in our laptop. In our phone. Now are pan network, maybe slightly connected or maybe separate than our local area network are the connection. And the data that are transmitting between our phone and R headset in our laptop
may be different than the information that our laptop is transmitting to the person next to us.
So just because we have a smaller network inside of our of our larger network doesn't mean that that other network logically encompasses our network. Just because we are talking through our Bluetooth onto our phone
inside of our office, that's a land doesn't mean that our pan is part of our land.
They're just physically in the same place.
So we have. We have a user that is that has their own little personal area network set up
with their Bluetooth and their headset in their laptop,
they're of our
personal area network in our local area network so far. Now, our next step up is gonna be our metropolitan area network. Our man, a metropolitan area network, may encompass things such as, Ah, College campus or a city. It's a network that isn't quite a wide area network, but it's larger than a local area network.
It may encompass a couple different buildings and may encompass
a couple different city blocks or an entire college campus. Eso will say that this one, this office building, is part of several different a couple different office buildings that are in the same location. They're on the same office complex campus
on, and they're all interconnected. And they all talk to each other because they're run by the same company. Maybe it's a government or a government agency
that has a campus with several different smaller buildings on their campus. But there's networks that are still connected throughout that campus. We could say that's our man, our metropolitan area network.
So add a couple other buildings here, and each of these buildings have their own have their own lands going on. But then our different buildings here are gonna be our metropolitan area network,
and then lastly, we have our wide area network now are wide area network typically includes several multiple lands inside a geographically dispersed area. So maybe this office built. These office buildings have a have a remote branch campus across country.
Maybe they are connecting to a different different countries servers,
and they have, ah, man set up. But when we think of a land when we think of a wide area network, one of the first and largest winds that come to mind is the Internet.
All the Internet really is is a connection of several smaller local area networks, and several shared resource is all combined and available to available for public use. So it's sort of our world's light largest when our world's largest wide area network.
So we'll say that this these different office complexes are all connected out, too.
The Internet
and then this office complex connection with the Internet is all part of our plan
are wide area network.
So we have several different sub networked apologies that we're going to talk about pretty much are pretty much all of them are going to be land apologies because we talked about our land technologies already are pan technologies are pretty much just Bluetooth infrared
topics that we covered. We've covered in other modules, and we've covered and we cover as well in our A plus, Siri's Bluetooth and infrared, and then our man is going to be our metropolitan area network. And we covered that a little bit when we talked about why Max in our on our way and apologies a lot of our way. And apologies
can also be applied to our man topology, our man technologies as well.
But let's go ahead and take a little bit of a closer look at our different land apologies and see what type of networks and what type of network setups are available there.
