Video Description

Using File Server Resource Manager to Manage Storage This lesson covers using the file server resource manager to manage storage. This lab-based lesson offers step by step instructions in the process of quota management using a pre-built quota template. Participants learn how to set up rules as to which data can and cannot be stored in a data file folder, for example you can set up a rule that images cannot be stored.

00:04
once we have the file service resource manager
00:07
actually on our system. So R f s r m on our system. We're not going to look at Howard too.
00:13
Benefit from managing our
00:16
so on. Our
00:17
tools may go to serve manager. We now would actually open up F S R m So after Sorry, Madge will be open
00:24
it. We would have our
00:26
environment that we can actually do our management.
00:29
That's our first thing.
00:30
Next second thing, we're gonna talk about its quota management. So first thing we do is get to R F s r M that we're talking about court amends to go ahead and expand out here
00:39
quota management section of your F s arm and you know it. You have two things. You have actual quotas. 1/4 templates is two things
00:46
we won't actually look. 1/4 templates first, So grand click quarter templates.
00:50
These are
00:51
trivial template.
00:53
Obviously, we could make a very legitimate argument that he's built in pre built templates are not necessarily conducive to a modern environment, but for the purpose of lab. We're gonna leave what they are.
01:03
So
01:03
we have 100 bag limit
01:06
to make a living
01:07
attuned to make a living with
01:08
Extension 200. Fitch make extended limit
01:11
a monitor any monitor 500. So
01:15
notice it's modern tier 202 100 gigabyte volume and monitor 500 megabyte share
01:22
notice. There's
01:23
the size that we have here
01:25
and 1/4 type we have
01:26
two times 1/4 that work with hard inside.
01:30
Hard quota means that when that limit is reached, that's it.
01:34
No more. Storage is a lot
01:36
soft breeze.
01:37
What has reached more stories will be allowed, but we'll be able to monitor and get reports. So you have to decide in your environment which one is more conducive to your operation. Harder, soft. But for what we're going to do for our environment is we're going t make a
01:51
duplicate of this template to work with. So we're not gonna modify the actual original template we're going to
01:56
right? Click on, for example, are 100 Meg limit and do create quarter from template
02:02
for that up
02:02
and we need a
02:04
quote, a path.
02:06
So where are we going to apply this quota
02:07
wearing everybody but doesn't get applied? So
02:10
we us you want to choose brows,
02:14
you can type it in. If you really want forgets to get cheese brows,
02:17
we're gonna go to our
02:19
e Dr
02:21
Going quick on that expansion of our dive and we're gonna choose. Where are you, Dr? We want to actually apply this. So we're gonna actually go into
02:29
lab files
02:30
and go to our
02:31
mod nine here and go to data.
02:35
So look at that
02:36
school down to click on one particular director. We're gonna apply this click out, okay?
02:40
And we have
02:42
create 1/4 on the path. We could also have auto apply template and create quotas on existing and new sub folders. We could do that if we really wanted to.
02:51
We also have
02:53
derive properties from this quarter. Tough. But if we want to use a different temple, we could actually make a different template for the drop down this, or we could define custom quarter properties manually in here.
03:01
Ed,
03:02
be
03:04
relative to what it is. So it's good. Look, I'm create here,
03:07
and we notice you've created a quota, not 1/4 template.
03:13
So that's a significant difference to remember, because our quota will now be in the quota
03:19
source rather than the quarter template source
03:22
So there's our quarter directory in our quarter. Tell plates. That's what we wanted.
03:27
Except so is that quote a template doing us any good?
03:30
Let's find out. Let's actually run a test against that. Because we just made a
03:35
100 bag limit. It's a hard limit. Four are Barb. It's so actually use a power shell to run a quick test out here.
03:42
Go ahead. Number of our power show.
03:44
Bring that back to our center. Screen
03:46
had used a command lit
03:46
two.
03:47
See if that limit is actually
03:51
going to be a force.
03:53
What is?
03:53
We're gonna want to get to the director we want to work with. So first thing I'd do is want to get that director so seedy. They were to get o r e.
04:00
Remember, we were on the e Dr
04:02
It lab files.
04:04
And we're also in
04:06
Bob
04:09
09
04:10
and we were in the data directory,
04:14
so way navigate to that location
04:17
Office.
04:18
Our file service utility lets a sexually do a piece of the puzzle here. A contest? So f s u till.
04:25
Well, let us actually run a test
04:27
would actually create a file. It affects you too. Also file
04:30
create do.
04:31
This is a test purpose,
04:33
and we're gonna say, Well, what the name of it
04:35
It's called a
04:36
large file
04:39
dot t x t.
04:41
We could put anything we wanted neither, but protested t X t for simplistic, simplistic purposes,
04:45
and we'll give you the file size.
04:46
Give me the file size will let us
04:48
test against this. The file size is based on having the
04:53
the actual dimensions of the file
04:56
beyond what it can actually store. So in this particular case will put in 130
05:01
000000
05:04
and we will hit. Enter
05:06
says. There's not enough space on the disk.
05:10
We know it's actually the straits of the disc. There's not enough space available to the quota,
05:15
so the air message can be a little bit misleading
05:17
to bear in mind.
05:18
It's about the quota. It's not about the actual cost base of the disk, because we tried to put 100 and 30 megabyte file in 100 megabyte limits space.
05:28
You know what? Let's do it. So that's what we want to see happen
05:30
next. We're excited to work with
05:32
a file screen so far, Quota. Let's just limit the size of the storage area
05:39
file screen. That's the scriptural What files go into it.
05:42
Let's go ahead,
05:44
get out of our apartment there and get back to our our file screening
05:47
on our efforts are management console.
05:50
Here we have
05:51
file screens,
05:53
file screen templates
05:55
and file groups.
05:56
Let's take a quick look of file groups and you'll notice in our file groups we have a lot of details. So we have audio video files pre created and includes. If you put your mouse over there, you see there's a whole lot of different files, things like banks and few twos and few one's backup files, which would be backups. And then they have to execute herbal files.
06:14
We have image files, office files, so these are already pre built, and we can actually
06:18
create one of our scouts cells
06:20
with the new Fogg. Put whatever he wanted,
06:23
and we could actually make one that's specialized for us. We could modify these
06:29
actual built in ones if you want, but you're better off keeping a file group that actually includes
06:33
the subset of what you want or the expanded set of what you want that we always have reference to go back to you in the event that something didn't work out the way you expected to do.
06:42
So
06:43
under file screen templates,
06:45
we'll take a look at our tip. It's we have block audio, video
06:48
block, email
06:49
block execute, herbal blocking his files,
06:53
a monitor, actually suitable assistant files. So these air screens that are already built out force, we could actually just implement them without actually having to go through any more
07:01
piece of the puzzle.
07:03
And we actually get to do just that where she could take a the block image files template here.
07:10
We're gonna
07:11
right click on it.
07:13
I do.
07:15
What?
07:15
Well, we could create a false screen from the top
07:17
notice. We don't want to modify the tough. It's okay. A file screen from the tough
07:21
and the factory that Where are we going to apply this file screen?
07:28
We're gonna plant that same location that we're using for
07:30
our test for the quota.
07:32
So you click on browse.
07:33
It's cool down on their environment. It expand all files,
07:38
expand by nine,
07:40
click at data and click out. Okay.
07:43
And it tells us we're deriving it from the block image
07:46
files
07:46
screen
07:47
they were gonna click out
07:48
create here,
07:50
and that would not show up in the file screens section so far. Screen sexually will tell us what the
07:57
location is. So there's our location of them
08:00
implementation what we're doing with it and the source stuff like that we're using
08:05
for our environment
08:07
and then ordered to
08:09
go to test that process
08:11
once again.
08:11
How do we
08:13
test the process to do that? Remember, we could actually test this with our office. You till we also tested another way.
08:20
Yes, we could.
08:22
And we're going to do just that.
08:24
We're going to
08:24
go to our file Explorer,
08:28
so it's a different to test it.
08:30
But whatever file explorer there
08:31
and in our file Explorer, we're going to go to that
08:35
all files lab files, my nine. So we're gonna actually scroll down to our environment. So
08:39
all files
08:43
that house by nine.
08:46
So there's our
08:48
environment you want to work with
08:50
and appear at the top. Now that we're in mod nine, we're going to actually you go to the home tab
08:54
up here a top
08:56
and are about to bring up our remit screen
09:00
head in there. We're going to
09:03
create a
09:05
new item. So
09:05
going to create a new item from within our environment,
09:09
actually, what it be
09:11
in by nine here,
09:13
scroll down
09:15
whole files.
09:16
That file's my died.
09:18
Oh,
09:20
and we're gonna do
09:22
in our do idle here,
09:24
click on a
09:26
that map image. So we're credit do item. That's a bit bad cribbage,
09:31
and it's just going to be
09:31
whatever you call it,
09:33
but just we could just call it whatever it is, but we're just gonna
09:37
changes chest image
09:39
for the purposes of our lab.
09:41
It's a test image.
09:43
I noticed we actually have a test image bit map
09:46
set up.
09:48
Remember, we didn't put the file screen on this location. We put the ball screen at another location,
09:52
so we actually need to now
09:54
tested and see if we can. Then put that in to that data folders.
09:58
So it's go ahead, right Click test image
10:01
head.
10:01
Copy it.
10:03
We could cut it if we wanted. Let's go to our data folder
10:07
and we're going to actually paste it here. So where is he?
10:11
Choose paste
10:11
and it tells us you need permission before this action.
10:15
Exactly. Did she tell you
10:16
you need permission to form it because we've said that you cannot store images.
10:20
I you were block images in that folder. They could try again all they want. So the end user could keep trying and trying and trying. It's never gonna work
10:28
when we would then canceled because it's not gonna work.
10:31
And the eventually if you were actually working a help desk, somebody would probably complain,
10:37
exact in terms of what's going on.
10:39
So we've tried it
10:41
and it didn't work.
10:43
And the end users probably put in to help. That's ticket. Tell us the key it store files or some of the guys.
10:48
So let's take a look at the storage report
10:50
because we've made these changes. So our storage report management here
10:54
notice we have no storage reports. We can
10:58
add or remove reports we can schedule in the report task,
11:01
or we can just
11:03
have the option here, too.
11:05
Go ahead,
11:07
generate report now, so
11:09
that's what we want, What Generate reports now or we can actually right click over here and do generate reports. Now take your choice. Either the action pain or by right clicking.
11:18
They would say, What do we want to do
11:20
what type of report we wanna have.
11:22
So,
11:24
first of all, we're going to choose to look for the large file.
11:26
Remember, we tried to put a large file in here,
11:28
so she scrawled out here, find large files,
11:31
and we will actually leave the
11:35
other piece of the puzzle as is
11:37
under the scope.
11:39
Gonna go ahead here,
11:39
choose scope.
11:41
The scope is going to be Include all folders that store the following kinds of data or
11:46
the following Folders are included in the scope.
11:48
We really want to worry only about the
11:52
folders on the E drives. Let's go ahead. Quick time
11:54
adhere
11:56
Can navigate down to our
11:58
Dr
12:00
Quick out. Okay,
12:01
To retaliate to actually
12:03
go down to the e Dr.
12:05
Give me a storage report for large files on the e dr.
12:09
But also it have a
12:11
delivery. If we're using mail to send it to us and on our settings tab, we would also say the maximum number of foster include and the report format.
12:18
If you could choose would ever report format you What could be html DHT Mel
12:24
and X M L C s V tax doesn't matter what format you wanted in
12:30
we're gonna go ahead and choose to do this.
12:33
The HTML for what? Word? For our purposes, it would click out okay
12:39
and says you chose to generally set of storage reports. Now, depending on the types of reports, it could take some time,
12:45
choose one of the following general reports in the background or wait for reports of generating. They display them.
12:50
We're actually good to wait for. The reports do generate and the display of a quick out. Okay,
12:56
it generates the storage reports that we asked for
12:58
and open up a window for us. And there's the storage of portions. Storage of ports
13:03
as a location on air Barb it
13:07
tuition. What? You open up that storage reports here,
13:11
so if you double click on it,
13:11
actually, it will open up our storage report. Environment
13:16
debated with type of file. We've said it for it was she opened up in that appropriate application.
13:22
So there we go. We have one file that fit. The category of our large file size of the little file size was five megs, so we had one, and it tells us the information about it and tells us
13:35
it's
13:35
obviously one of ours, and it tells us
13:39
the system by We're working with built in administrators.
13:43
Ed, go to the top of the report. It tells us that our environment
13:46
so large vase report table of contents here and says
13:50
we have the backs of the file size
13:52
that gives a storage report. We can actually
13:54
good work with whatever storage report we want. Change whatever dimensions we want.
13:58
Go ahead. Quick on that goes out of that. It will close on. Efforts are
14:03
we're back to our main screen.
14:05
We've actually managed a storage report based on putting it quotas and a little bit of file screening so that we're gonna
14:13
the next I said, we'll talk about
14:15
advanced file screening processes.
