WAN, Circuit vs Packet Switching and Transmission Media This lesson covers different Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies, properties and applications. WANS allow us to connect multiple local area networks (LANs) over a larger geographical region. WANs use the following technologies:
- Circuit: connect as needed (such as ISDN or phone lines); no buffering needed
- Packet: this is shared and always on, the bandwidth is shared.
WANS also use the following transmission media: - Cables
- Phone lines
- Cable lines
- Fiber optics
- Radio waves/ infrared
